Note: This adapter only works with IEEE-1284 printers, not MFD's (no multifunction devices) Laser Printers and Inkjet printers by HP and Epson only! This is not a printer port adapter but a printer converter (this item will not work with dongles, scanners, cameras etc.)

How the USB Serial RS232 / IEEE1284 Printer converter works
The USB Serial RS232 / IEEE 1284 Printer converter with Prolific technology allows the use and operation of an additional serial device via USB control. The USB to ieee1284 printer converter electronically add a USB printer support connection between a IEEE-1284 printer and a USB port as seen in the image below. The simultaneous usage between the serial port and the parallel port is controlled by the prolific technology built in. The USB to Serial port converter is totally self powered by the USB Port it's connected to. To install the device on your computer, first insert the converter driver CD into your CD-ROM drive and install the drivers. After the drivers have been installed, connect the USB Serial to rs232 converter to your USB Port. The new hardware wizard in Windows after connecting the USB Serial rs232 converter should automatically recognize the new hardware. You will see that the prolific USB to serial bridge drivers will be installed and hardware found. If the device is not in your device manager after install, select scan for hardware changes to refresh the device manager.
NOTE: If for some reason the rs232 converter is not recognized after connection follow these steps. (1)try refresh your device manager. (2)manually add the hardware through Add New Hardware Wizard. (3) Reboot your computer with the device connected.

Testing the USB Serial RS232 / IEEE 1284 Printer converter
During testing of the USB Serial RS-232 / IEEE 1284 Printer Converter 1 serial modem was used as seen in the images above. Once the device is connected to the USB serial converter, the add hardware wizard will allow Windows to find your hardware through the serial ports, this should happen automatically in Windows XP. You may need to install the drivers for those particular items your are connecting and refresh the device manager. The IEEE 1284 Printer Converter was also recognized automatically and installed as USB printing support. |
To make sure your devices have been installed, take a look in your device manager for the drivers. The image on the left shows all devices used in the testing. The device manager is seeing the devices through the USB Serial RS-232 Converter. The modem performed as it should through the USB to RS-232 Serial Port Converter.
